Synergy

Synergy is a universal theme in the music industry, affecting bands from The Flaming Lips to 'artists' such as Miley Cyrus. It helps to create a brand identity and is vital to any musician, here is an in depth look at Green Day's recent identity and stylisation.

Green Day's latest three albums; Uno! Dos! and Tre! (all released within three months) all contain very significant style similarities. These include the band name plastered across the top of the album cover in a bright colour, all using the same font, the album title in the bottom left in Spanish stylisation, the bright coloured, psychodelic background which features a different pair of colours for each album, and finally, a picture of each band member taking up a large amount of the cover.

Many of these features are replicated in the lead single from Uno - Oh Love's music video.

There are a huge number of similarities between this and the Uno boxart, going from the font used to the background styles and even the two colours being exactly the same. It contains 3D imagery for those with 3D glasses.

The official music video for Oh Love, however, is very different to this, but also tells the listener about Green Day as a band.

The video suggests Green Day are a rock band as it presents the stereotypical 'drugs, sex and rock n' roll' lifestyle that is often associated with rock bands, so this gives the listener an idea of just WHO they are listening to, as well as an idea of what.

The trailer for the album also follows in line with the Uno colour scheme and keeps the style Green Day have going on in line. This includes using the Uno track 'Kill the DJ' in line with the colours and style of the Uno Dos Tre trilogy, while also showing them being involved in the music recording session, helping to bring across the idea of them being a rock band.

In conclusion we can see that there are particular features that help get across Green Day's brand identity. These are:

  • Psychadelic backgrounds
  • Vibrant contrasting colours
  • Emphasis on the album's singles
  • Usage of a particular font
  • Sex, Drugs and Rock n' Roll lifestyle emphasised
