Overview of Class Activity - Appeal of Music Videos to Audiences

A music video is a great way for an artist to gain a mass audience quickly as it's a second chance
for them to promote their song, but on a visual level.
Because of the speed of social media rising in day to day life, website's like Youtube can make
the news with an artists music video. Ideal examples would be:

Justin Bieber - Baby /  Miley Cyrus - Wrecking Ball / Robin Thicke - Blurred Lines

Baby: This video exploded on the internet and was the big breakthrough for Justin Bieber. After the video, the single and album went to #1 on the US Billboard chart and was named the highest-certified single sold in the US music history, having gone platinum 12 times in America.

Wrecking Ball: This music video gained the Vevo World Record for the highest number of views in 24 hours (18 Million). Mainly known for it's controversy it currently has 186,000,000 views and was only released 3 weeks ago.

Blurred Lines: The song was already a huge hit worldwide, but the video gained a mass audience when 2 versions of it were released  Like Miley Cyrus, the video is mainly known for it controversial content of topless women and has now snowballed into it demeaning women.

All 3 videos went viral. For Justin Bieber:

  •  Baby appealed for his audience by having a cute narrative and having him in the centre which is what the teenage girls want.
  • Miley Cyrus somewhat appealed to a selective audience as she's growing up she will hope to get an older fan-base which is emphasised by the explicit content of the video. However, the video risks loosing a mass audience of younger fans
  • Blurred Lines appeals for Robin Thicke & Pharrell's audience as they're much older and mainly male.
