I called it colouring cos I don't know what it's real name is but the internet seems to suggest it's called colour grading? But anyway I'm talking about what makes footage go from this:

I was thinking about my thriller from last year and why it couldn't look like a real film and I realised that part of the reason was that the colours were so dull and unsaturated it made the footage look really amateurish. I don't want our music video to have this look too as music videos usually have colours that are vibrant and pop out so I tried to do some research on how to enhance colours.
It seems you can edit colours on most video programs so I practiced on one I had at home (Adobe Premiere) and came up with this effect:
|
An effect I used to edit and enhance the colours I wanted on the footage. |
Which made the footage look like this:
|
Top: Original footage. Bottom: The re-coloured footage |
|
Top: Original footage. Bottom: The re-coloured footage |
It basically made the neutrals and shadows darker and the other colours more bold. Personally, I think it looks better but it's just an idea to think about when we start editing next week. If we do decide to go for this kind of effect I guess we'll have to learn how to do it on Final Cut Pro so expect maybe another post on that.
