Fuction of a Music Video

 Function of a Music Video

The function of as music video as a whole is a rather simple, being a device that is used to sell singles to the masses, using visual aids to help the song, as well as giving artists another platform to be able to get their product out there.

While the basis of a music video generally stays the same, the topics and ideas raised in them can vary largely from genre to genre. An example of this comes from the difference between pop music videos and rock music videos. Pop music videos are full to the brim with bright colours and different costumes that stand out to the viewer, dealing a lesser emphasis on the music and telling the story, and more pleasing the eyes of the viewer by any means necessary, whether that be through colours or through the emphasis of more sexual aspects.

On the other hand, a rock video would tend to be far more performance based than a pop music video, with a greater emphasis being shown on the band actually playing the song, giving close ups on instruments and on the lead singer's face, thus showing that he is singing.
