Past Student Digipaks

Messie M

I feel bad criticizing this digipak because track number 3 is one of my favourite song titles ever, but I have to analyse this digipak fairly. There are many problems with it, for example, the picture is too small for the frame and has a huge black border, I don't know why. The main problem however is the effect that has been put on both the front and the back pictures. It looks very bad, and is a clear example of why you should not put filters on pictures. The hmv advert on the front is also pretty weird and a little misplaced. The font for Messie M and the album title should be bigger and better positioned too. One thing I do like about the digipak is the track names.
The inside has similar problems, there is no CD hole, a strange Halloween colour scheme which has no continuity with the front colours and track listing again when it seems unnecessary. It did not feel good writing this but I guess it is important to know what pitfalls students often encounter in digipaks so I can avoid them.

I like this digipak. It's very well made, has clear fonts and looks like a real CD cover which must surely be the point. You can see the artist quite clearly but you also get a clear sense of what kind of artist she would be from the weird lights and poses. Another feature I like, although it's very subtle, is the slightly darker area at the bottom which separates the boring legal information from the artist. I think it is subtle things like that which make this look like a real album cover in the way Messie M's just kinda doesn't. If I had to find one thing I don't like it would probably be that I don't particularly like the fonts, although they are clear and there's nothing especially wrong with them, I feel like this kind of artist might have a slightly less 'Arial' looking font for her name or maybe the album title. But really that's a very small thing. I do think Messie M has better track names though. (Bedroom Hymns???? Moon and Moon???? Ok then Poppy Power)
